Finding Ground, the first solo exhibition by Cambridge School of Art MA student Aeron Hall-Apps. Featuring site-responsive abstract drawings utilising natural ink making and a giant grass nest.

Hall-Apps contemplates and explores their relationship with the rural landscape. Utilising local materials and tactile approaches, her practice is an investigation of place identity and personal experience that questions how we might develop a sense of belonging.

Local pigments are the primary medium for gestural works that trace her movement through the seasons and her human presence within the land. This elemental connectivity brings an awareness of the ecology of site, some of the charcoal inks made from scorched trees from the 2022 wild fire.

Sculptural installations explore the nature of shelter. Using harvested wild grasses gathered during periods of summer drought, the work forms a nest-like enclosure that evokes both refuge and isolation. By its nature the work will continue to change, fade and age.

The work is a means to reacquiring a space for oneself. To be in emptiness. To watch things, to change and grow. Finding Ground is an invitation to pause…

Finding Ground

Aeron Hall-Apps

Aeron Hall-Apps grew up in rural East Sussex, spending time as a child in the fields, laying in the grass, plaiting and making dens. She now lives in South Suffolk exploring the rural landscapes through walking, sitting, observing and is a recent MA student at the Cambridge School of Art. Her practice centers on understanding our personal experience through drawing, foraging, and organic sculpture.

Working from a phenomenological lens, Hall-Apps contemplates and explores their relationship with the rural landscape. Utilising local materials processed slowly through natural ink making and harvesting, her practice is an investigation of place identity and personal experience that questions how we might develop a sense of belonging. The work is a means to reacquiring a space for oneself. To be in emptiness. To watch things, change and grow.
